Cringe-Worthy Misheard Song Lyrics
Cringe-Worthy Misheard Song Lyrics
Singing the wrong lyrics to a song isn’t much of a problem if you are singing in the shower or while driving alone. On the other hand, shouting âHold me closer Tony Danzaâ to Elton’s John’s âTiny Dancerâ can be embarrassing in a group. Like it or not, or admit it or not, we’ve all probably done it. Here are some of the more frequently misheard lyrics.
Perhaps at the gold standard of misheard song lyrics is the Jimi Hendrix song from 1967, âPurple Hazeâ. In the song, Hendrix states âExcuse me, while I kiss the sky.â Of course, the song is classically misheard as âExcuse me, while I kiss this guy.â
Who doesn’t know the song Africa from Toto and later rerecorded by Weezer. While many people sing âI miss the rains down in Africa.â the actual lyrics are âI bless the rains down in Africa.â
The Eurythmics created some confusion in 1983 with their hit âSweet Dreamsâ. What they sang was âSweet Dreams are made of these.â but what many heard and repeated was âSweet Dreams are made of cheese.â
If you want to get a chuckle from friends, the next time âLike a Virginâ from Madonna comes on the radio, replace âLike a virgin, touched for the very first timeâ with âLike a virgin, touched for the 31st time.â
Even the Beatles and Monkees weren’t immune from misheard lyrics. While the Monkees sang âThen I saw her face, now I’m a believer.â some turned that into âThen I saw her face, now I’m gonna leave her.â On âA Hard Day’s Nightâ The Beatles sang âSo why on earth should I moan?â but people heard everything from âSo when I let you come homeâ to âSo when I answered the phone.â
In the case of âDon’t Bring Me Downâ by The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), truth may be stranger than fiction. Most people will sing âDon’t bring me down, Bruce.â But the song’s writer says the lyrics are actually âDon’t bring me down, groose.â In this case, songwriter Lynne said groose was just a meaningless lyric placeholder that was kept in the song. Intentional misheard lyrics? That’s just not fair.
